Municipality of Kaufbeuren (PP7)
Municipality of Kaufbeuren

Kaufbeuren dates back to the middle of the 8th century. Officially founded around the year 1200 during the reign of the Staufer dynasty, in the course of the centuries Kaufbeuren became prosperous due to its textile and blacksmith industries. As a free Imperial City, it was represented at the "Permanent Imperial Diet" of Regensburg. In the Middle Ages the town had a population of approx. 2000 and was fortified by town walls with 9 towers and 3 gates. Parts of the medieval fortifications are still preserved today and, together with some further 160 listed historical buildings, bear witness to the town's architectural heritage.
