Plzen, a significant economic, cultural, and administrative centre in the south- western of Bohemia, lies in the lowest part of the Plzen Basin on the confluence of the rivers Úhlava, Úslava, Radbuza and Mze. The city was founded towards the end of the 13th century by Wenceslas II at the place where important trade routes crossed. Today the D5 motorway between Prague and Rozvadov cuts through the city, as do busy international routes. Therefore, the city's position and easy access still continue to affect its life. As a result, Plzen is the second largest city of Bohemia (after Prague) and the fourth largest in the Czech Republic. It assumes a dominant position in the western part of Bohemia. It is the site of the Plzen Regional Authority and other state authorities with regional competence, as well as the University of West Bohemia and the Medical Faculty of Charles University, which lend the city some of its ambience.
